Azim Premji Foundation started in 2001 as a non-profit organization with a vision to significantly contribute to achieve quality universal education for every child in the country and facilitate an equitable, humane and sustainable society. The foundation, which works in the area of elementary education, has a potential for systematic change in millions of government-run schools. It focuses on working in rural area, as majority of schools exists there.
Azim Premji Foundation currently functions across several states in India including, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Pondicherry, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh in close partnership with the government and non-government organizations of each state. The main purpose of the foundation is to contribute towards the improvement of quality and equity of school education.
The foundation also focus on other areas related to education including; child health, nutrition, ecology and governance. The foundation achieves these goals through an integrated approach, which contributes to a dynamic response.
The main four key strands of the work of Azim Premji Foundation include the following.
Talent creation: The main motto of their work is to develop a critical mass of people who have a clear vision, deep motivation and competence to engage in social action. As a part of this goal, they develop fresh talent and build capacity in the existing talent of leaders, teachers, teacher educators, development professionals and education functionaries.
Knowledge creation: They create knowledge and evidence that provide deeper insights into the solutions to the obstacles in education and development in the Indian culture and context. As a result, a culture of evidence based decisions in policy and program is created.
Network of Institutions: Azim Premji Foundation developed a network of institutions that spread across the country and actively build knowledge, develop skill and work for reform in education and allied developmental areas on a sustained basis.
Social Pressure: The strong institutional networks of Azim Premji Foundation facilitate social pressure for improvement in equity and quality by continuing education, field impact and awareness building. It can change the way that functionaries and communities think about issues in education and development.
Large scale impact in education and development can only be achieved through permanent and dynamic institutions, which function towards improvements in education and associated developmental areas at multiple levels. With the experience of working at grass-roots level for over a decade, Azim Premji Foundation established several institutions that have been working in an integrated manner to facilitate such improvements, which are;

The strategy of Azim Premji Foundation is the seamless integration of these institutions in order to catalyze changes by knowledge creation, talent development and integration of theory and practice.
